Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. August 9, - Published on Amazon. Verified Purchase. Going off the reviews, I thought this would work for my students as an abridgment of the classic for their summer reading, and I honestly thought it might be the same one I used to use when teaching it during the school year from an out of print textbook. This abridgment leaves out key things that make the parts it leaves in impossible to understand if you aren't already familiar with the story.

I am SO embarrassed that I suggested parents buy this catastrophe of an abridgment. The publishers should be ashamed of the way they have butchered this classic.

Our Mutual Friend - Daisy Chapman

August 7, - Published on Amazon. Oh, the beauty and the agony tears at me as I think about this stunning story. The characters are vivid and the settings so well written that I was transported to the graveyard alongside young Pip and his convict, fear streaking through me as it was for that small boy torn by a near-impossible decision. I can feel the fire on my skin and taste hot metal on the back of my tongue. The love, the heartbreak and the lessons still hold true today. Some choices, once made, can leave long-reaching scars on the hearts of those we never knew we touched.

A good deed can ripple through time to places never imagined. The consequences of our actions must be accounted for, and there will always be outcomes we could never have anticipated. The deliciously-satisfying prose is the whipped cream on the proverbial sundae that is Dickens. The plot and subplots and sub-subplots are astounding! He has you, and you sigh with the perfection of it all.

August 27, - Published on Amazon. I avoided reading books by Charles Dickens because I thought the old style of English would be too tough to work through and keep my interest. I was wrong. I waited 64 years before I figured this out. Maybe I needed to wait until this before I could appreciate his work. It is basically a story of a young orphan boy, named Pip, coming of age in the mid- 19th century.

It is a life full of characters both good, bad and in between. The main thrust though is how theses characters all affect young Pip's beliefs; fears and This Oxford edition is the original story. The unforgettable story of Mowgli, the man-cub, his jungle friends Baloo the Bear, Kaa the python and his enemy, the evil tiger, Shere Khan. This classic of which we are all familiar — the story of Mowgli the boy rescued and brought up in the jungle by wolves, of Rikki Tikki Tavi the mongoose amongst a number of other jungle stories — has been vividly brought back to life as much for grown-ups as for children by Templar Publishing. Kimball O'Hara, the orphaned son of an Irish soldier, spends his childhood on the bustling streets of Lahore, begging and running errands in order to survive. One day he meets an old Tibetan lama, and he decides to accompany him on his travels across the Indian subcontinent. After falling into the hands of his father's old regiment, however, Kim is separated from the lama and sent away to school.

There, his natural flair for espionage is spotted, and he is soon catapulted among the majestic peaks of the Himalayas to play his part in the secret service's confrontation with Russia, the so-called Great Game. With its peerless evocation of the teeming cities, breathtaking landscapes and diverse cultures of late-nineteenth-century India, Kim is widely considered to be Kipling's masterpiece and one of the greatest novels written in the English language.

This edition contains extra material for young readers. Inspired by The Jungle Book, this illustrated colouring and transfer book features beautiful scenes, and bright and colourful rub-down transfer sheets for decorating fun. Well-known characters, such as Baloo, Bagheera, Mowgli, Kaa and Shere Khan are all just waiting to be brought to life with colour.

This special Puffin Classics edition brings together two of the most inspirational collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London - the works of Arts and Crafts pioneer William Morris and the literature of Rudyard Kipling. The adventures of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the snake-fighting mongoose, little Toomai and the elephants secret dance, and Kotick the white seal are all part of Mowglis extraordinary journey with his animal friends. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Both books. The Jungle Book includes 37 black-and-white illustrations. The Second Jungle Book includes 12 black-and-white illustrations. Classic Kipling short stories and verse, including the last of the Mowgli stories.

The stories were first published in magazines in The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. Kipling was born in India and spent the first six years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six-and-half years. These stories were written when Kipling lived in Vermont.

The tales in the book and also those in The Second Jungle Book which followed in , and which includes five further stories about Mowgli are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. As with much of Kipling's work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, and succeeded by another. The Jungle Book, because of its moral tone, came to be used as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts, a junior element of the Scouting movement.

This use of the book's universe was approved by Kipling after a direct petition of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, who had originally asked for the author's permission for the use of the Memory Game from Kim in his scheme to develop the morale and fitness of working-class youths in cities. Akela, the head wolf in The Jungle Book, has become a senior figure in the movement, the name being traditionally adopted by the leader of each Cub Scout pack.

First published as part of 'The Day's Work' , it is the curious story of a boy's adventures both in real life and within his dreams. This short story is also further refined by illustrations by F. Joseph Rudyard Kipling was a seminal English writer of short stories, novelist, and poet. He is most famous for his poems concerning British soldiers in India and his wonderful children's stories.

Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive.
